Sesaco promotes soybean use

Sesaco, a local food-processing firm, has partnered with international organisations to promote soybean production in the country.

The firm announced at a recent workshop in Kampala that it would work with American Soybean Association (ASA), United States Department of Agriculture, and World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), to promote the crop and its byproducts like soy coffee, soy flour and soy milk.

Ugandans have poor soy bean intake despite being one of the widely grown crops in the country. Sesaco Managing Director Charles Nsubuga said this was wider campaign to impart skills while creating awareness about soy byproducts.

“We want to see soy products become part of every Ugandan’s regular menu,” Nsubuga said.

Fresh soy beans are commonly cooked for sauce while dry soy seeds are usually exported. Soy flour is used to bake cakes, bread, and sausages. It’s grown widely in northern, eastern and Rwenzori regions.
